Stages of Polygraph Testing

The full cycle of a polygraph examination is divided into two levels: the specialist’s preparatory work and the direct procedure with the person being tested. Below is a detailed description of each stage.
Level 1

Work on the Examination

Preparation carried out by the polygraph examiner before meeting with the person being tested: studying the situation, preparing test questions, conducting the procedure, and analyzing the results with the preparation of a report.

Level 2

Direct Testing

The procedure in the polygraph examiner’s office: pre-test, testing, and post-test interviews, breaks between tests — everything that takes place directly with the person being examined.

How the Examination Process Is Organized

Preparation of materials and conducting the test — from the first conversation with the client to the final report.

  1. 01

    Situation Analysis

At this stage, the polygraph examiner collects as much information as possible: receives a description of the situation from the client, interviews witnesses, and reviews documents and case materials. If necessary, the examiner visits the location — office, warehouse, or scene of the incident — to better understand the context and formulate accurate test questions.

  2. 02

    Preparation of Specialized Tests

Based on the collected information, test blocks and questions are developed. For employee screening, the topics and wording of questions are agreed upon with the client. Each test is designed according to methodologies appropriate for the type of examination — personnel screening, investigation, or expert examination.

  3. 03

    Testing

Conducting the polygraph procedure with the person being tested. Standard testing of one person usually takes 2–3 hours. Expert examinations and complex investigative cases may take several days and involve testing multiple individuals.

  4. 04

Analysis of Results and Report Preparation

After the procedure, the specialist thoroughly analyzes physiological responses to each question and prepares a written conclusion. The analysis usually takes about 2 hours; in complex cases, it may take up to one working day.

What happens during a polygraph test

Four stages of the procedure involving the person being tested — from the introduction to the polygraph to the final interview.

01

Pre-test interview

The polygraph examiner explains how the polygraph works, discusses all questions with the person being tested, and completes the Voluntary Consent Form. This is a mandatory stage before the sensors are attached.

02

Actual testing

The person answers the test questions with “yes” or “no” while the polygraph records physiological responses. Each test is conducted several times (presentations) to improve the reliability of the results.

03

Inter-test interview

Breaks between individual tests: the person rests, and the polygraph examiner may conduct a preventive conversation if resistance or tension arises during the procedure.

04

Post-test interview

Discussion of reactions and answers recorded during the test. In the context of internal investigations, the purpose may be to obtain additional explanations or statements from the person who was tested.
